How It Works

System Requirements: To use Splocker, your system must use Sendmail, MySQL, and PHP.

Upon receipt of an email, Sendmail (the Unix email program) passes the message to a program for delivery into a mail box. Splocker modifies the delivery program to check a a database and determine whether or not the recipient has enabled "splocking" and if so, whether or not the sender is authorized to send.

If the sender is authorized, the message is delivered.

If the sender is not authorized, he is sent an email asking him to "unsplock" himself by visiting a web site and entering an 8-digit code. After successfully entering the 8-digit code, the sender is placed in the database and permanently allowed to send messages to that recipient without ever again being asked to verify himself.

The person whose email is protected by Splocker can add the names of persons he wishes to receive email from. This is referred to as a "courtesy unsplock."

Every morning, the person who is protected receives an email showing the sender and subject of all "splocked" messages. He may also visit his "splocker" web site and check if there are any "splocked" messages that he would like to manually "unsplock."
